Is Texting Ruining Your Posture?

On an average day, a smartphone user spends about two to four hours slouched over their devices. In one year, that can average out to 700 to 14,000 hours. Now think about how that might effect your spine and posture.

Recently, a New York spine surgeon conducted a study to determine the effects of a forward-tilted head posture on a person’s spine. The experiment proved that the spine perceives the weight of the head according to the position of a person’s head. With every added degree the head is angled forward, the heavier the head feels to the spine.

To understand the amount of weight your spine may feel when your head is tilted forward, consider the following discoveries:

  • When tilting the head at 15 degrees, the weight increases from 12 to 27 pounds
  • When tilting the head 24 degrees, the weight increases to 49 pounds.
  • When tilting the head at 60 degrees, the weight increased to 60 pounds.

Of course, this is a large increase in weight when you consider the amount of pressure that puts on the cervical spine. Furthermore, constant slouching and bad posture can result in the following injuries:

  • Muscle strain
  • Pinched nerves
  • Herniated discs
  • Irregularities to your neck’s natural curve

How You Can Prevent These Types of Injuries

In most cases, texting is the number one reason people use their phones on a normal basis. However, bad posture can also occur due to any of the following:

  • Texting
  • Emailing
  • Gaming
  • Working

To prevent avoidable harm to your neck and cervical spine, be sure to maintain a neutral spine when using your devices and other forms of technology. To do so, move the head back so that it is over your shoulders while slightly pulling your chest forward.
