Gwinnett Pain Clinic Carries a Proud Name

At Gwinnett Medical Back & Neck Pain Chiropractic Center, we consider ourselves very fortunate to call Gwinnett County home.

Did you know that the county was incorporated on December 15, 1818, and is named after Button Gwinnett, one of the three Georgians who signed the Declaration of Independence? He also helped to write Georgia’s state constitution.

Button (don’t you just love that name?!) was born in Gloucestershire, England. We don’t have a record of his birth, but he was baptized there in 1735. He got married before leaving Britain and heading to the New World in the 1760s. His first stop was Charleston, South Carolina, but he moved on to Savannah, Georgia and, by 1765, was established there as a trader.

His political career began in 1769, when he was elected to the Georgia Commons House of Assembly. According to History.com, “His politics were deeply influenced by his contempt for the wealthy and powerful city Whigs of Savannah. Gwinnett’s political base of country Whigs consisted of less prosperous coastal dwellers like himself and backcountry farmers. When first made commander of Georgia’s Patriot forces, Gwinnett was forced to resign by the outcry of city Whigs.”

He didn’t let that stop him. As History.com reports, “He went on to win election to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia and became a signatory of the Declaration of Independence.”

After writing his name in the history books, Button returned to Georgia and threw himself into the political fray once again. He served as speaker of the state legislature, helped birth Georgia’s constitution and stepped into the role of governor when Archibald Bulloch died suddenly in office in 1777.

Unfortunately, Button’s story does not have a happy ending. He clashed with Lachlan McIntosh, one of the city Whigs he still despised. The two men agreed to settle a dispute over who would lead a military expedition to secure Georgia’s border with Florida with a duel. On the morning of May 16, 1777, two shots rang out. Both men were wounded. McIntosh would survive but Button developed gangrene and died three days later.

He may have been a bit of a hothead, but you can’t help but be stirred by the story of a man who came from humble origins and went on to proudly stand up to the British crown and to wealthy

interests in Georgia.
